J Lindeberg to go fur-free worldwide

As part of an international weekend of action against Swedish-based fashion designers J Lindeberg, London activists started the ball rolling on Friday 19th Jan with a protest outside their European Head Office and factory/showroom, situated near Covent Garden. Twelve protesters, one dressed as a fox, arrived and asked to speak to the management about the company's use of real fur. We were told the managers were not around but the staff would contact them with our message, and they added that they were aware of previous protests in Sweden.

We then began to display anti fur posters and hand out leaflets to passers by, including many of J Lindeberg's own staff who were going on lunch breaks, and even one or two of their wholesale customers. We also used a megaphone to get the message across to the company and to the other businesses in the neighbourhood.

After just under an hour, a member of staff emerged and said that the management had decided that future collections from J Lindeberg would not include any animal fur, and that by July all their worldwide stock would be fur free. He later produced a statement on headed paper from the company's head of international marketing, which was also emailed to CAFT at the same time, see below for text.

It was at this time that the police arrived, and we were able to inform them that the demo was finished. We also had to contact some protesters who were due to turn up later that plans had changed somewhat, and some of the protesters were off to have an extra unplanned demo at Harrods! Ironically J Lindeberg has a concession in Harrods.

We forwarded the news and the statement to our Swedish friends who had organised the weekend of action, and who had been protesting against the company since December. They were then able to cancel all the protests in other countries, including several in Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Italy and the United States, freeing up activists to maybe take on other tasks this weekend.

Please consider contacting the company to congratulate them on their compassionate decision, see below for address.
