Boos greet opera singer and Fayed at opening of Harrods post Christmas Sale

Dec 27th 2008

Fur demo at the Harrods sale, Dec 27th 08Dozens of protestors turned out at the opening of the Harrods Winter to show their opposition to the sale of fur at the store.

As the special guest, opera singer Katherine Jenkins arrived preceded by a marching bagpipe band, the store's owner appeared and posed for publicity photographs in front of a large crowd of reporters and photographers, while protestors displayed placards and called out anti-fur messages.

The protest was very effective, both visually and vocally, and the waiting public and media were left in no doubt about the scale of anger at the the sale of fur at Harrods, the only UK department store to sell fur.

The publicity for the demo was fantastic and worldwide, with reports in national and local newspapers, as well as on BBC and ITV national tv news, numerous radio stations and at least 400 news sites all over the world, exposing taking the anti-fur message to a massive audience.

Here are a few reports.

Harrods, the last department store selling fur

Harrods is now the only department store in the UK which continues to sell real fur, even though the production of fur is illegal in the UK.

Harrods calls itself the "world's most famous department store" and its store in Knightsbridge is Europe's largest department store. The last survey at Harrods revealed a wide range of real fur garments on sale on display throughout the store, and included items made from beaver, chinchilla, red fox, arctic fox, mink, musquash, rabbit, wolf, coyote and squirrel.

Harrods protests take place regularly at the store in London, see below for protest reports. You can take part whether you can spare an hour or the whole afternoon, to give out leaflets or hold placards etc. The store is on Brompton Rd, SW1, the tube is Knightsbridge, head for the exit marked Harrods/Brompton Rd. Contact for demos is 07899 775493 or email london@caft.org.uk. There are also whole weeks and weekends of protests on some occasions.

More and more shoppers and tourists are getting the message every week, tens of thousands have signed the petition, hundreds of thousands of leaflets have been given out, and hundreds of potential customers have been turned away. Please join the campaign. Whether or not you can make the protests, please contact Harrods and ask them to stop selling fur.

For the sake of the many thousands of animals tortured and killed on fur farms to supply Harrods, it's vital that we persuade Harrods to take the compassionate decision to stop selling real fur. Whether or not you can make the protests, please politely email, phone, fax, write to Harrods to request that it takes the compassionate decision to stop the sale of all real animal fur and adopt a fur-free policy. Remember to point out that fur farming is illegal in the UK, so they should come into line with the wishes of the British public and the democratic will of Parliament which has outlawed the production of fur in this country. .
